Writing Workshop

We have been busy learning about various genres during writer's workshop.  Students have studied and written personal narratives, realistic fiction, and essays.  We recently launched our current unit: informational writing.  During this unit, students will identify topics they know a lot about, and then they'll get ready to draft by teaching their topics to partners.  They'll try on topics and revise these topics with an eye toward greater focus, and then they'll draft the sections of the books that they're most eager to write.  During our mini-lessons we'll study mentor texts to see how authors write about ideas, not just facts.  Ask your children which topic they're teaching others about in their informational writing!
